Mothers - Is this normal?

Advice Time! Kai is about 8 weeks old and has been sleeping pretty well. On a usual night, he'll sleep around 4 or 4.5 hours. Sometimes he's been getting around 5 or even 5.5 hours of sleep at a time. But the last 4 days or so, he's reverted back to his newborn days and sleeping only 2.5-3.5 hours at a time; causing his beloved mother less than sufficient sleep.

So, I am wondering:

A) is this normal for sleep patterns to vary without any worry B) do you think this could have something to do with the fact that he is taking longer and more regular naps that before (still not that long, usually less than an hour) and C) would anyone like to watch him today so I can take a nap? Your wise words are appreciated.

It's all totally normal, not a cause to worry unless it goes on for a REALLY long time (like months) and probably a combination of A & B (or something else completely unrelated). Sleep patterns will be inconsistent for a LONG time (like years). Of course, I probably don't know what I'm talking about since my kids are like the WORST sleepers on earth!

I know you've probably heard a million times to take a nap when he naps. Totally true. Dishes and laundry and everything else (even blogging) can and should take backseat to your sleep needs. If Momma ain't getting enough sleep, ain't nobody gonna be happy!

I would LOVE to watch him during the day. Though seeing how Natalie treats her "babies" (dolls) you might not feel safe leaving him here...

First and foremost CONGRATS!!!!! He is the smooshiest most hug able little man EvEr!!!!! My only advice is get the book Babywise. Read it, love it, LIVE it!!! I wish all moms knew about it. It will explain everything. The most importnat thing I felt was the schedule of: eat, wake sleep patterns. Make sure he stays awake after you feed him for at least 1/2 hour if he is 8 wks and THEN put him down to bed. Night feeding he goes down RIGHT after you feed him. If you have any questions or want to email me and tell me I'm full of it =) please do!!! sisternartker@yahoo.com He is BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!

Yeah good luck with the sleep patterns thing. It seems like it is a guessing game for the first year or so. Be strong, and maybe have your hubby take a night. That helped a lot. Pump for him or tell to use formula, and you get the rest you need too!

growth spurt? I'm pretty sure it's normal and he'll be back to his old self soon enough...

If he is 8 weeks it's a growth spirt! Just as Julia Coronado...she is all-knowing about when those take place. Every time I would wonder why my baby wasn't sleeping well or eating more often Julia would ask how old she was and low and behold she was going through a growth spirt! Once she got through that week or two she would be back to normal. So sorry about the blow out moment at the airport by the way. Been in those kind of situations before..SOOO FUN! NOT!

Yep.. i'm sure it's a growth spurt. He needs to nurse a little more often for a day or too to build up your milk supply so you'll make enough milk to keep up with his growing body.. and i don't want to be argumentive..but I would say to NOT read the Baby Wise book.. but it is up to you how you want to parent your ADORABLE little boy. I'm so happy for you guys!
